Why Wool? Wool is an excellent material for a diaper cover. It is water resistant, breathable and absorbent. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture, so even if the diaper is completely saturated, wool will still give you that extra bit of absorbency to prevent leaks. That’s why many people love wool for overnight. Wool is breathable so it helps regulate baby’s skin temperate, keeping baby’s bum warm in winter and cool in summer. It is great for preventing or helping to clear up diaper rash. Wool is also all natural, so it doesn’t take many resources to process wool, helping to save our environment, especially organic wool. Plus, wool lasts a long time and when it does wear out it isn’t going to sit in a landfill somewhere for hundreds of years. Wool is also naturally anti-bacterial and doesn’t retain odors. For this reason, it just needs to be aired out in between uses and only requires washing once every couple of weeks. Wool is water resistant because of the lanolin in wool. Lanolin is what keeps sheep from becoming soaked when out in the rain. After the wool has been made into your diaper cover it is lanolized, which makes it water resistant again. To maintain the water resistance, you will want to re-lanolize your cover from time to time.
Washing Wool Covers Wool covers only need to be washed once every couple of weeks, depending on usage, or if they begin to smell when dry or get soiled. We recommend using Eucalan Wool Wash. It has lanolin built right in. Hand washing in lukewarm water is best for wool. Fill the sink or a container with lukewarm water and wool wash, add the cover and let is soak for about 10 minutes. Eucalan does not require rinsing. Remove the cover and dry it by rolling it up in a thick towel. Do not wring it. Then let it dry in a warm dry place - not in direct heat or sunlight. You will want to occasionally lanolize your wool covers for best performance also.
Lanolizing Wool Covers If wetness starts coming right through your cover and water no longer beads on it, it is time to lanolize it. In order to lanolize your covers all you do is add a small amount of lanolin (such as Lansinoh - 1/4-1/2 inch squeezed from tube) to a cup of very hot water. Stir it around until the Lansinoh dissolves. Then add the mixture to a sink full of lukewarm water. Mix it in and add your cover. Make sure the water is warm enough to keep the Lansinoh from getting goopy, but not too warm. You can also purchase liquid lanolin, like our Sheepish Grins Liquid Lanolin. Mix a teaspoon of liquid lanolin into warm water. Gently swirl the cover around to coat it with the lanolin and then let is soak for about 15 minutes. Remove the cover and dry it by rolling it up in a thick towel. Do not wring it. Then let it dry in a warm dry place - not in direct heat or sunlight.
